Fall & Winter Lawn Care

It's time to prepare for fall and winter lawn care. Visit us at Stone Creek Nursery for any overseeding, lawn planting or winter prep lawn care products or questions.

A lush, green, weed-free lawn is the envy of every homeowner. Trouble is, many of us don’t really know how to go about making it happen. So, here’s a simple, five-step plan for fall overseeding that will make the neighbors gawk without having to pay for a big company to come out every month with their little white van of chemicals.

  1. First, get your yard ready by cutting your grass down lower than usual. And, catch your clippings, even if you normally don’t, so they don’t get in the way of your new seed.
  2. For your soil, the surest way to go is to rent a verti-cutter (think about going in with a neighbor to save money on the rental). A cross-hatch pattern will give your seeds a better chance to get deeper into the soil. Remember, the further down the seeds are into the ground, the better.
  3. Next, it’s time to apply your seed. Start with Kansas Premium Grass seed. Then a solid, even coverage is really important, especially with those new bare spots. So, we always use a drop or rotary spreader. Some people are good at “spreading” the seed with their hands by throwing the seed into a slight wind. We don’t know about you, but we’re not that good, so we recommend a spreader!
  4. Your new seeds will be hungry, so you’ll want to fertilize right away. To build those deeper roots your grass needs before the ground freezes, we use ferti-Lome New Lawn Starter. It’s got the vitamins and nutrients that are really important during early growth. Add in Natural Guard Soil Activator at this time too. Soil Activator releases the nutrients already in the soil making them readily available for the grass to use.
  5. Lastly, and maybe the most important, is to water, water, water! Personally, I use this time to unwind at the end of the day. But whenever you water, keep the soil really moist. And, water every single day. Just avoid standing water, and you’ll be fine.

Give your lawn what it needs so it’ll be the talk of the block come spring time!
